How to Polish a Copper Tray?
In short: Copper trays tarnish and lose their shine over time due to oxidation. To remedy this, gentle scrubbing methods using natural, easily available household items such as lemon and salt, or vinegar and flour, can be used. Regular and proper maintenance helps your trays maintain their original luster.
- Natural materials like lemon-salt or vinegar-flour are the most effective and safe methods for polishing copper trays.
- Gently scrubbing the tray during the polishing process, followed by rinsing with plenty of water and drying immediately, prevents scratches and water spots.
- For the interior surfaces of tinned copper trays, soft cloths and detergents that will not damage the tin should be preferred, while the outer surfaces can be polished using traditional methods.
Hand-crafted with meticulous care and rooted in Gaziantep's ancient coppersmithing tradition, our copper trays add a unique warmth to our kitchens and presentations. However, over time, oxidation occurs due to the natural structure of copper, causing your trays to lose their luster and tarnish. This tarnishing does not diminish the quality of the copper; rather, it tells the story of its history. Yet, restoring its original shine is quite easy with the right methods.
As Master Coppersmiths, we are happy to share with you, drawing on our generations of accumulated knowledge, how you can polish your copper trays at home using the most natural and safe ways. Our goal is not only to sell our products but also to pass on the subtleties of this valuable craft and practical information that will extend the life of your items.
Why Do Copper Trays Tarnish and When Should They Be Polished?
As copper trays come into contact with oxygen and moisture in the air, oxidation—a natural chemical reaction—occurs on their surface. This can turn copper's characteristic reddish color into a dark brown or even greenish layer. While this layer is a patina that protects the surface of the copper, it aesthetically masks the copper's glow.
When you should polish your copper trays depends on your frequency of use and personal preference. Generally, when you notice dullness or significant tarnishing on the copper surface, it is time for polishing. A light weekly wipe, a deep polish once a month, or maintenance before special occasions ensures your trays always look eye-catching. You can use products like the red printed handled copper tray that we produce in our Master Coppersmith workshop for many years with regular maintenance.
Methods for Polishing Copper Trays at Home: Sparkle with Natural Ingredients
Although there are many chemical products on the market to polish your copper trays, traditional methods usually provide the safest and most effective results. You can add a natural shine to your copper trays with ingredients you can easily find at home. Here are some methods we also prefer in our workshop:
1. Lemon and Salt Method
This method is one of the best-known and most effective ways to restore copper's shine. The acidic nature of lemon and the mildly abrasive property of salt work wonders in removing oxidation.
- Cut a lemon in half.
- Sprinkle plenty of table salt onto the cut lemon.
- Rub the salted lemon piece directly onto the surface of the tarnished copper tray. Be sure to scrub in circular motions.
- For stubborn stains, you can sprinkle some salt directly onto the tray and continue scrubbing with the lemon.
- After scrubbing the entire tray, wait about 5-10 minutes. This will help the lemon acid dissolve the oxidation on the copper.
- Rinse your tray thoroughly with plenty of warm water. Be careful not to leave any salt or lemon residue on the surface.
- Dry immediately with a clean, soft cloth. This step is very important to prevent water spots from remaining on the copper.
2. Vinegar and Flour Method
The vinegar and flour mixture is a great alternative, especially for larger surfaces or for those who do not prefer the smell of lemon. This mixture forms a paste layer on the copper, gently removing oxidation.
- Mix equal amounts of white vinegar and flour in a small bowl. Stir until it reaches a paste consistency. You can add more flour if necessary.
- Apply the paste you prepared evenly to the tarnished areas of the copper tray with the help of a clean cloth or sponge.
- Let the paste sit on the tray for about 15-20 minutes. This time is sufficient for the vinegar acid to take effect.
- At the end of the waiting period, clean the paste by gently scrubbing with warm water and a soft brush or cloth.
- Rinse your tray with plenty of water and dry it immediately by polishing it with a dry, soft cloth.
Tips for Deep Cleaning and Stubborn Stains
Some copper trays may show more stubborn stains and tarnishing when left unmaintained for a long time or exposed to heavy use. In such cases, you can intensify the above methods or try a different approach. For instance, more caution may be required on processed surfaces such as the black hand-hammered presentation tray.
Baking Soda Paste
Baking soda is known for its mildly abrasive and cleaning properties. When combined with vinegar, it creates a powerful cleaning paste.
- Mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda and 1 tablespoon of white vinegar in a bowl. It will start to fizz.
- When it reaches a paste consistency, apply it to the tarnished areas with a clean cloth.
- After waiting 10-15 minutes, rinse with warm water and dry immediately.
Cream of Tartar and Lemon Juice
Cream of tartar is a traditional ingredient frequently used in copper cleaning and forms an effective polish when combined with lemon juice.
- Make a paste by mixing 2 tablespoons of cream of tartar with 1 tablespoon of lemon juice.
- Apply the paste to the copper tray and wait 5 minutes.
- Scrub gently with a soft cloth, then rinse thoroughly with water and dry.
Important Safety Note: Never use cleaners containing bleach or ammonia while polishing your copper products. These chemicals can damage the copper and pose health risks. Also, avoid using hard brushes or wire scrubbers, as these can scratch the copper surface.
Secrets to Keeping Your Copper Trays Shiny and Protection Methods
Protecting the shine is as important as polishing your trays. Regular and proper maintenance habits extend the life of your copper trays and ensure they always look as good as the first day.
Dry Immediately: After each wash, dry your copper trays immediately without letting them sit, using a clean and dry cloth. Allowing water droplets to air-dry can leave spots on the copper and lead to new tarnishing.
Correct Storage: Store your copper trays in a dry place away from moisture. If possible, you can wrap each tray individually in a fabric cover to reduce scratches and contact with air.
Keep Away from the Dishwasher: Copper products should never be washed in the dishwasher. The high temperature and harsh detergents of the dishwasher can discolor the copper, accelerate oxidation, and particularly damage the tin linings.
Acidic Foods and Drinks: Avoid leaving acidic foods and drinks such as lemon, vinegar, and tomatoes in non-tinned copper trays for long periods. Such foods can react with the copper, potentially damaging both the copper and posing a health risk. If the inner surface of the copper is tinned, this issue is resolved.
Is There a Difference in Maintenance for Tinned Copper Trays?
Yes, the maintenance of tinned copper trays differs from non-tinned ones and requires more attention. Tin coats the inner surface of the copper, cutting off direct contact with food and ensuring food safety. Therefore, tinned copper trays are generally used for serving or cooking.
| Feature | Non-Tinned Copper Tray | Tinned Copper Tray |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose of Use | Mostly decorative, for presentation (dry foods or presentations with minimal contact) | Food serving, cooking (inner surface is suitable for food contact) |
| Polishing Method | The entire surface can be scrubbed with natural pastes (lemon-salt, vinegar-flour). | The outer surface is polished with natural pastes; only mild soap and cloth are used for the inner surface. |
| Things to Consider | Avoid prolonged contact with acidic foods. | To avoid damaging the tin layer, hard scrubbers, metal spoons, or acidic cleaners should not be used. If there is tarnishing or wear on the tin, it may need to be re-tinned. |
When polishing the outer surface of products like a tinned baking tray, take care not to let the paste or abrasive substances come into contact with the tin on the inner surface. To clean the inner surface, use only warm water and a very mild dish soap, and wipe with a soft cloth. Ensuring the tin coating is not scratched or worn is vital. If you notice the tin coating is worn or tarnished, you should consult a trusted artisan to have your product re-tinned.

Master's Note
When polishing the copper trays into which we pour our labor and love in our workshop, our most important tip is patience. Do not rush after applying the natural mixtures; let the copper absorb the material and then scrub gently. Remember, copper is a living metal, and every touch you give it brings it to life.
